I had a very difficult time looking for information on bringing ADHD medications to China (mostly anecdotal reports, or very outdated information) – so thought Id report back my experience to help others! 

Essentially – any immediate release or amphetamine-based medications (ie dexamphetamine or adderall/amphetamine) are unlikely to be accepted in. Thankfully, I use a long acting medications (ie Vyvanse/Concerta) which helped my case.

Unlike countries like Korea or Japan, I didn’t need to apply for approval ahead of my trip – which was a relief! 

What I did to take ADHD meds to China:

– Requested a letter from my primary care provider (ideally the psychiatrist, but mine did not reply despite numerous requests)
– The letter contained: my name (+ passport details), the medications I am planning to bring (generic/brand name, dosage, number of tablets needed for the trip, why I am taking medications, prescribing doctor and pharmacy you get the medications from)
– A copy of the prescription (or at least a picture)
– The letter translated to Mandarin by a certified translator – THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL! Immigration didn’t even look at the original letter! => I googled local translators in my area – most work online. I did question legitimacy of some, my advise is to almost do like an email “contract” of sorts to ensure confidentiality – translators work under an ethical code to maintain confidentiality anyway
– What I mentioned in the email was: “I am wanting to confirm that the letter I would like translated and shared with you will be treated as strictly confidential. Specifically, I would like to request that you will not disclose or share the content with any third parties without my explicit permission, and that the information I share is only for the purposes of the translation request. “
– Brought the exact number of tablets I needed on original packaging (ideally one that has your details + prescriber on it)
– I declared on my arrival – some reports say dont even bother declaring but I really didn’t want to take the risk

Medications that can be questioned include ADHD meds + strong pain killers/sleeping tablets. I dont use the other 2 but I imagine the process would be the same – just need to discuss with your doctor if you really need the tablets + if there are alternatives.

Hello from Australia!

We’ve done every Universal in the world!

My son and I have now done every universal in the world!

Here are some tips for Beijing Universal

1. We caught the bullet train after being at Disneyland Shanghai. Very easy. We did first class and booked online. Took 4.5hrs.

2. We took a taxi from the train station to Universal. Took about 60 min and was roughly $35 aud.

3. We stayed at the Universal Studios Grand Hotel which is right at the entry of the park. I highly highly recommend.

4. We did three days and could easily be done in 2 days

5. We didn’t get the express pass because we had the disability pass (my son is legally blind due to brain cancer). You get this at Guest services at the entry. You need proof of disability and they were so kind.

6. The express pass would be beneficial on busy days. Most rides were 40 min and the park was fairly quiet. The Deceptor coaster was max 5 min every day! We rode this 12 times over three days. The G force blows your mind. No drops but 11 loops and corkscrews.

7. The Jurassic world ride was insane and amazing

8. We ate at Hammonds restaurant for lunch and highly recommend.

9. We ate dinner at the Chocolate emporium at universal city walk each night once the park closed

10. We used a Wise travel card and you need to ensure you bring the physical card, because they only use Alipay and do not use Google or Apple Pay

11. Have Google translator as really no one spoke English

12. We averaged 22km walking a day, so wear comfy shoes

13. Harry Potter world was identical to Japan and LA

– and amazing. You don’t need special entry – you come and go as you please

14. The How to train your dragon stage show was one of the best I’ve seen – all in Chinese, but you can understand what’s happening

15. You need your passport to get into the park every day and will have your face scanned

16. We booked through Klook as I didn’t have Chinese approved cards. I printed the vouchers but they had our passes already on their system with our passport info.

17. The hotel has 60 min early entry which meant we did the Harry Potter rides over 6 times before the park opened

18. It was an amazing park – smaller than Florida but very similar to the others

19. We felt exceptionally safe and had the most outstanding time

20. Oh and Kung Fu Panda land was so so cool!

Yes! The BEST thing is that because we are hotel guests for both days to Disneyland, the bus shuttle drop is at a Secret Side Entrance with instant entry into the park with ZERO queues! We got inside the park swiftly like magic!!!

We have just returned from our trip to Shanghai and wanted to give back some information to help others.

We are a family of five

From Melbourne Australia

Three children aged 14, 14 and 11

We stayed at Disney resort

We stayed at Disney resort which was great location.

The ferry home was for to door and fantastic. As part of being a guest you are allowed free travel on the bus to Disney all day or ferry (after 10 or 11am)

We purchased tickets both ways.

First way was a Disney dream package including concierge. Concierge meaning- fast past for most rides. Single use only. Not multiple.

It also included reserve viewing of Mickey express show which was a 15 minute street parade and wonderful.

It also include the momentous light show reserve seating. Which was by far spectacular.

We chose package classic as it suited our childrens age for rides and also chose package B which was for the late shows.

3.30 parade and 9pm light show.

We booked this package via the website a week earlier just to secure a great package.

This package was fabulous however we also planned to go another day and just take our time.

For this reason we purchased tickets from the resort.

Staying at the Shanghai Disney Resort gives you early entry

Normal admission tickets. Cheap and with staying at the resort we automatically got early entry. They also gave us one fast past for one ride of a choice of six or so rides. We used it on tron ride as it was our children’s favourite.

Wholes there on the day with general admission the lines got long and the wait wasn’t worth it. So we purchased on the day within the park a fast pass for six rides that suited our children’s age.

It proved very handy and worth the money.

Shanghai Disneyland individual fast passes

I purchased whilst in the park on the app and it was super easy. You can also purchase individual fast passes for rides. Aim for $30 Australian a ride if you choose this idea.

All in all a fabulous trip. We could have done it in one day with fast passes and early entry helps to get an extra ride on that you love. Tron was 10 min wait at the beginning of the day. 1.5 hours in the middle of the day.

As for using the app- we had no trouble once we had access. Staff help. However you do need to receive a text to get the wifi working. This proved tricky when none of us had access and we all were relying on wifi. So a kind working offered to use there phone number to receive the access code and I typed in there phone number and code they had recieved. Once I was in on my phone I used the same code for the rest of the family.

Hope everyone has a magical time visiting like we did.

What are the Shanghai Disneyland Courtyard Hotel rooms like?

This was our room at the Courtyard last week.

Is there a free hotel shuttle bus to Shanghai Disneyland?

Bus leaves early for early entry and comes back late. Leaves quite often of a morning then stops till late afternoon.

Rooms were okay personally think they just need a good carpet clean otherwise big bed, clean linen, clean towels, decent size bathroom etc.

No English TV channels but that seems pretty standard over there. Tea/coffee making in room, and in lobby.

Lounge bar I believe had just opened back up saw people having drinks in there. Little shop on site as well for drinks/ snacks and another small shop 200mt down the lane from it.

What is breakfast like at the Courtyard Hotel?

Breakfast was okay all the usual

Bacon

Eggs

Pastries

Toast

Yogurt

Cereals

Fruit

Full buffet

We spent most days/ night at the park as only there 3 nights. We also took a taxi to and from the park at night instead of the bus and it cost about $5 a time so cans are very cheap and there are hundreds of them at Disney waiting.

How much does Shanghai Disneyland early entry cost?

This hotel was. $1000 cheaper than the other one we looked at and early entry cost us about $25 and was worth it we got around 4 rides done before the park opened.

Which Shanghai Disneyland Premier Access Passes should I buy?

We paid for premier access passes 6 a day in a package and to be honest only needed to use maybe two of them a day as it was not busy but I didn’t want to take the chance if it was busy.

Which days of the week should we go to Shanghai Disneyland?

We went on a Monday and Tuesday and spent Wed/Thursday in Shanghai at another hotel.

How far is the Marriott Courtyard Hotel from the airport?

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport approx 40 minutes from the Marriott and that cost around $35

Does Shanghai Disneyland have a DAS disability pass?

1. My son has the DAS pass as he has brain cancer that also took most of his vision – so this really helped with wait times. You get this from guest relations when you first enter the park.

Is English spoken at Shanghai Disneyland?

2. English isn’t really spoken, so ensure you have Google Translator

How long are Shanghai Disneyland ride queues?

3. Times were very very long, up to 3 hrs!

How much is the Shanghai Disneyland ride Express Pass?

We purchased the express pass for 2 days, which was $500 Aus for two people each day. It gave us 8 rides each day. Totally worth it if your budget allows it.

Does Apple Pay work at Shanghai Disneyland?

4. Apple Pay doesn’t work, so make sure you have the physical card or Ali Pay

Do you need to take your passport to Shanghai Disney?

5. You need your passport to get in each day at the gates

What hotels are at Shanghai Disneyland?

6. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel which had a shuttle bus which took minutes to get there – really nice hotel (we stay at the park hotels everywhere else)

Is Shanghai Disneyland big?

7. It’s a very big park and we did 20km walking plus each day

Are the Shanghai Disneyland shows in Chinese?

8. All the shows are in Chinese but still a lot of fun

9. When you come into the park, there are many people selling illegal merchandise, which I don’t remember happening years ago. It’s odd that Disney allow this! But you just walk on!

Is there a Downtown Disney at Shanghai Disneyland?

10. Downtown Disney has the Cheese cake factory which is the best place to eat!

It’s an amazing park – some odd things were seen such as grown men urinating in bottles in lines, but other than that, it was pure magic!!!

What are some good rides at Shanghai Disneyland?

11. Tron and Pirates are our all time fav rides

Should I buy an eSIM for Shanghai Disneyland?

13. We use Holafly eSIM which has a vpn, so all apps on my phone worked inc Facebook! Worth it as you need a lot of data for this park!!!!
